Prof. Bolaji Abdulfatai Sule was born on January 7, 1954 in Nguru, Yobe State, Nigeria. He attended early school at Nguru between 1959 and 1965 and had his high school and higher school education in Lagos between 1967 and 1973. He studied at the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria between 1973 and 1978 where he obtained first class honours degree in Civil Engineering. He was posted on national service to Rivers State, Nigeria and had his primary assignment with the Shell Petroleum Development Company, Port Harcourt (1978-1979).
Prof. Sule joined the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria as an Assistant Lecturer in September 1979. Between 1980 and 1984, he was at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA where he obtained MS and Ph. D in Civil and Environmental Engineering with specialization in Water Resources Systems Optimization and Management.He returned to Ilorin on completion of his studies and was appointed lecturer II in the Civil Engineering Dept. He rose through the ranks becoming a senior lecturer in 1988 and professor in 1994.
He has published over 100 articles in peer reviewed journals and learned conferences.He is the recipient of the 2010/2011 University of Ilorin Researcher of the year award. He has also served as external examiner to various Departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering in several universities within and outside Nigeria. These include Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya (2009-2014); Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda (2009-2012); Vaal University of Technology, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa (2011-12), North-West University, Mafikong Campus, South Africa (2015 -2017). Between 2016 and 2017 he was a four-time visiting short term professor at the Pan African Institute of Water & Energy Sciences (including climate change), AbouBekr Belkaid University, Tlemcen, Algeria.
He has served in various capacities in the University of Ilorin. He was Head of Civil Engineering (1992-1994,1999-2005) and Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Technology (2005-2008). He was the pioneer Director, National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development, an agency of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (2008 to 2014). He has also served on various administrative and technical committees and boards within and outside the university. He was elected the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), University of Ilorin, Ilorin in March 2018.
Prof. Sule is a COREN registered engineer, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers and a Fellow of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria. He was Secretary LOC 1999 Annual Engineering Conference and AGM of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of 2012 Annual Engineering Conference and AGM of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, both held in Ilorin. He is a keen golfer and was the Captain of Ilorin Golf Club in 2007. He is happily married with three daughters.
