Professor Adebayo Wahab Salami is the current Director of National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED). He assumed duty on 1st February 2019. The Centre was established by statute No. 5 of the University of Ilorin in July 2008 and is one of the outreach University-based energy research Centres under Energy Commission of Nigeria located at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin. He joined the services of University of Ilorin, Nigeria on 20th August 2000 as an Assistant lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering and became a Professor on 1st October 2017 in the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, University of Ilorin, Ilorin.
Born on 2nd July 1965 in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, Professor Salami attended St. Mark’s Cathedral Primary School, Offa, between 1973 and 1979, after which he proceeded to Offa Grammar School for his Secondary education between 1979 and 1984. Professor Salami studied Agricultural Engineering (Soil and Water Engineering option) at the Federal University of Technology Minna and obtained B.Eng. in 1990 with Second Class honor, Upper Division. He also obtained Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with distinction in 1998 and a postgraduate diploma in Computer Science, PGDip. Computer Science in 2002 with Second Class honor, Upper Division from the same institution. He later proceeded for his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Civil Engineering (Water Resources and Environmental Engineering), at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin and obtained PhD degree in 2007, his PhD research was focused on Operational Performance of Water Management Model for Hydropower System on River Niger under Reservoir inflow forecasting. During his PhD study he was a visiting scholar at New York State University, Buffalo and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA under Fulbright Scholarship from June 2006 to May 2007 (IIE Grantee ID: 15064438).
Professor Salami has been an associate researcher with NACHRED since it’s inception in July, 2008 till his appointment as the Director of the Centre. He was the Pioneer Regional Coordinator for National Water Resources Capacity Building Network-North Central Region (NWRCBNet-NC),Centre located at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin (May 2012 – Sept. 2015). He is also an associate researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering and Surveying, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa from February 2013 to 2015. He is a registered Engineer with COREN and a Corporate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (MNSE). He is also a member of International professional bodies such as Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and a Member, Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN) and Member, Nigeria Hydropower Professional Association (NHPA).
